GEL has been investing in the future of Engineering for over 30 years.
A structured Advanced Apprenticeship programme is in place and we are taking on more young people year on year, building up their skills and knowledge base, ready to meet our growth plans. We currently have a total of 12 Apprentices on our Apprenticeship programme; making up 7% of our workforce. We currently conduct all of our Apprenticeship training through Training 2000 Ltd. The programme involves 4 years of training with the first year is spent in college, and the following 3 years based in the work place, with a day release to continue with your qualifications at Training 2000 Ltd.

The training is made up of both academic and hands-on professional skills; but it also has a wider learning aspect in the form of Drugs Awareness, IOSH Working Safely, Road safety Awareness, and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards which includes an aspect of outward bound days and voluntary work. The learning does not stop once the Apprenticeship is completed. All GEL apprentices are expected to complete up to HNC level, and are actively encouraged to continue with their studies, either to HND, foundation or degree level, challenging boundaries and pushing for success.

GEL has high standards and high expectations of its Apprentices, but we also provide great opportunities. GEL has started up an exchange package this year with larger industrial partners, building upon our apprentices knowledge of manufacturing and business; we run visits to key nuclear sites in order to provide a broader understanding of our industry; and we have linked in with the Welding Institute (TWI) and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) based in Rotherham, to provide the Apprentices with an insight into new technologies and manufacturing processes.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has given their Approval of EngTech Apprentice Scheme, confirming that the GEL scheme is delivering the Engineering Council UK-SPEC requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician. This means that anyone successfully completing the scheme will qualify for EngTech registration
The recognition provided from the GEL Apprentice scheme flows down to the individual apprentices themselves, who having worked hard, are being commended within the wider business environment for their skills and contribution. Andy Hudson, having completed his Apprenticeship with GEL in 2012, was awarded both Supply Chain Apprentice of the Year and Nuclear Apprentice of the Year 2013, sponsored by National Skills Academy for Nuclear and Cogent. He was also runner up in the City and Guilds Award for Apprenticeship Champion of the Year, North West, Apprenticeships National Awards 2013, run by the National Apprenticeship Service. Ashley Hodgeon was recognised by our training provider, Training 2000 Ltd, as their 1st Year Nuclear Apprentice of the Year 2013, and Declan Tierney-Doogan is a Machining finalist for his year at the World Skills competition to be held in November 2014.                                                                                                                                    GEL as a business has an Award recognition scheme for our best performing Apprentices.

We run our Apprentice recruitment process from March through to July each year. We are looking for enthusiastic engineers of the future with GCSE grades of A to C in Maths and English as a minimum. However, the academic aspect is just one part of the process. What else do you do? Having a hobby, belonging to a team or club, doing voluntary work, or working towards a goal are all recognised and commended in our interview process. We need to know what makes you different and why we should employ you!

So, if you are looking for an exciting opportunity and a technical career, then the best way to apply is; either through Training 2000 Ltd and making a specific wish to work for Graham Engineering Ltd, or by sending an email to us, via the Contact page, expressing your interest in our Apprenticeship Programme.
